JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discussed the crash of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow, days after the UN report declared Russia responsible for the disaster.
The UN aviation board this week discovered Russia's fact responsible for the crash of an MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014 during fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian troops.
Moscow rejected the findings of the International Civil Aviation Organization Council (ICAO) regarding the accident that killed all 298 passengers and crew, citing the ruling as biased. Anwar said in a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 14, evening, he would continue to press for accountability for the disaster.
"Malaysia remains steadfast in ensuring fair accountability and settlement for the victims and their families who continue to bear the burden of this tragedy," he said.
Anwar said during the meeting Putin expressed his condolences to the families of the dead, which included 196 Dutch nationals, 43 Malaysian nationals, and 38 Australian citizens or residents.
Putin called for a thorough and comprehensive investigation that was not politicized, Anwar said.
"I mentioned that this is a report made by ICAO, and he (Putin) replied that from the start, he had requested that the investigation be carried out independently and thoroughly," continued the Malaysian PM.
Anwar said Putin spoke to him Russia was ready to provide his cooperation to ensure that the report was more credible or authoritative.
Dutch prosecutors have accused Russia in a 2020 court case of trying to sabotage an investigation into the accident.
The court later sentenced two Russian intelligence agents and a Ukrainian separatist leader in absence of their role in the attack.
Anwar is in Russia for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, agriculture, education, aerospace, and energy.
