YOGYAKARTA After Pope Francis' funeral in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome on Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Vatican will hold a conclave to elect a leader of the world Catholic Church aka the Pope. So, who is the candidate to replace Pope Francis? Check out the full information in the following article.

Please note, the new wave or whale selection is likely to be held 15 to 20 days after Pope Francis dies.

According to the Archbishop of Jakarta Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, conclave is likely to be held as early as May 6.

"The matchlaf itself will only start, only after 15 days after the passing of the Pope. So the fastest is the conclave starting May 6," said Cardinal Suharyo after the Requiem Mass at the Jakarta Cathedral Church, Thursday, April 24, 2025.

Even so, the timing of the conclave will be decided by the cardinals at the Vatican. He could not confirm whether the conflict could begin on May 6 or still need further preparation.

Cardinal Suharyo himself will leave for the Vatican on May 4 to follow conclave.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin (70) is the Vatican Secretary of State. He played an important role in international diplomacy, including a sensitive relationship with China and the Middle East. Cardinal Parolin is seen as a moderate figure who can become a bridge between reform and stability.

Cardinal Peter Tukson is also on the list of candidates to replace Pope Francis. So far, Cardinal Tukson is known as a person who cares about social justice.

The other replacement figure for the Francis whale is Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. He is from the Philippines, known as a religious leader who is progesive and close to Pope Francis.

Cardinal Tagle is noted to have led the Congregation for the Evangelicalization of the Nation. He has the spirit of inclusiveness and evangeliation.

Previously, Cardinal Tagle was included in the Pope's candidate in the 2013 conclave when Fransiskus was elected.

Next there is Cardinal Ambongo who comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Fridolin Ambongo Besungi has been Archbishop of Kinshasa for seven years, and was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis.

Cardinal Ambongo is known as a cultural conservative. He opposes the blessing of same-sex marriage, stating that "sex marriage is considered contrary to cultural norms and in essence evil".
