JAKARTA - Russia and Ukraine blame each other for violating the one-day Easter ceasefire declared by President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, with both sides accusing each other of hundreds of attacks.

President Putin ordered his troops to halt all military activity along the front lines in the three-year war that had lasted until midnight Moscow's Sunday time.

Russia's Defense Ministry said Ukraine had violated the ceasefire more than 1,000 times, damaging infrastructure and causing civilian deaths.

The ministry said Ukrainian troops had opened fire on Russian positions 444 times and said they had calculated more than 900 Ukrainian drone attacks, including in Crimea and Russia's border areas in the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions.

"As a result, there were deaths and injuries among civilians, as well as damage to civilian facilities," the ministry said.

The TASS news agency quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying there was no order from Putin to extend the ceasefire.

"No other orders," Peskov said when asked if the ceasefire could be extended.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia pretended to comply with the Easter ceasefire, but had launched hundreds of artillery strikes on Saturday night, and more on Sunday.

Russia launched 67 attacks from midnight to 8 p.m. local time, President Zelensky wrote on X.

"Whether Putin has no complete control over his troops, or the situation proves that in Russia, they have no intention of taking concrete steps to end the war, and are only interested in favorable PR coverage," he wrote.

"However, there is no airstrike warning today. Therefore, this is the format of the ceasefire that has been achieved and is the easiest to extend," he explained.

President Zelensky reiterated that Kyiv was willing to extend the ceasefire for 30 days, but said if Russia continued to fight on Sunday, Ukraine would also do so.
