WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump awarded a contract to Boeing Co. in an effort to maintain the air supremacy of the United States amid a rapid increase in China's military power.
The contract is to update plans for the development of next-generation fighter jets.
Trump made announcements about the development of the fighter jet in the Oval Room, White House, Friday, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth who said the move sent a very direct and clear message to allies that the US was not leaving them.
Hegseth added that the plan is a warning to US enemies that Uncle Sam will be able to project its power around the world without a hitch for future generations.
Some details of the program, known as the Next Generation Air Domination platform, have been revealed.
Boeing beat Lockheed Martin Corp. for the US Air Force's sixth-generation fighter jet contract, called the F-47, which seems to refer to Trump as the 47th president of the United States.

Trump, who was also the 45th president before returning to the White House in January 2025, told reporters the future plane would be something never seen before "in terms of all fighter jet attributes," from speed to maneuverability to payload.
"The F-47 will be the most advanced, most capable and deadliest aircraft ever built," Trump said, quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, March 22.
"The aircraft's experimental version has been secretly flown for nearly five years, and we believe that the aircraft is far superior to the capabilities of any other country."
He said the fleet of new aircraft, equipped with the "experiencing stealth technology", would be built during their second term of office.
When the Trump administration took further steps in the development of the aircraft, which would later fly accompanied by a companion drone, China has reportedly made progress in developing a fighter aircraft without a next-generation tail that is unofficially known as J-36.
Trump said the United States would be open to selling down versions of the F-47 to certain allies.
"We want to reduce their influence by about 10 percent, which might make sense, because one day, maybe they are not our allies, right?" he said.
