President Sheinbaum Says Mexico Has Reserve Plans If President Trump Imposes Tariff Threats

JAKARTA - Mexico will wait and see if United States President Donald Trump will actually impose a threat to impose tariffs on neighboring countries on Tuesday, the country's president said on Monday, adding Mexico had a reserve plan if the tariffs were in place.

Speaking at a news conference Monday morning, President Claudia Sheinbaum said he would speak more about the decision on the matter on Tuesday, but whatever the US decides, Mexico is ready.

"We have a plan B, C, D," said President Sheinbaum, without providing details on the plan.

Mexican officials met with their US counterparts in Washington last week to deal with trade and security policies, an attempt by Mexico to prevent the imposition of an increase in tariffs.

Earlier, President Trump accused Mexico and Canada of not doing enough to stop the flow of synthetic drugs such as fentanyl and the arrival of migrants on their border with the US, threatening to impose a hefty tariff if those countries did not crack down on the two issues.

President Sheinbaum described the meeting in Washington as "arcore" and said that coordination with the US has so far gone very well.
