JAKARTA - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday questioned the sincerity of the United States in seeking negotiations with Tehran.
In his televised address at Azadi Square, Tehran, President Pezeshkian said, "If the US is sincere about negotiations, why would they impose sanctions on us?", reported Reuters on February 10.
He said Tehran "does not want war, but will not give up on foreign pressure."
Last week, US President Donald Trump restored a "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran that included efforts to stop Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons and tightening sanctions.
However, President Trump said he was open to an agreement with Iran and expressed a willingness to speak with President Pezeshkian.
On Friday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said negotiating with the United States Government was an unwise act, reflecting on past experiences.
"Netching with America won't solve any problems. Proof? Experience (past)!" said Ayatollah Khamenei Friday, reported IRNA.
Khamenei referred to Iran's past experiences in negotiating and making deals with the United States and other governments in the 2010s, saying although Iran offered a large concession to other parties under the agreement, the US reneged on its obligations.
"America did not comply with the agreement. People who are now in office (in the United States) have broken the agreement," he said.
"The agreement was intended to lift American sanctions. The sanctions were not lifted! American sanctions were not lifted," he said.
That is, continued Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's experience.

"A person should not negotiate with the government like this; negotiating (with him) is unwise, not intelligent, not honorable," said Khamenei.
Trump brought the United States out of the 2015 Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) between Iran and world powers unilaterally in 2018, again imposing sanctions on Iran, in the first period of his administration.
The sanctions that hit Iran's economic sector prompted Tehran to violate the pact's nuclear boundaries.
