JAKARTA - Japan deployed fighter jets after Russian bombers flew over international waters approaching its territory.
"We confirmed that Russian military bombers and fighter jets flew over the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan yesterday, and we deployed the Air Self-Defense Forces fighter jets in response," Japanese government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters, Friday, January 31, quoted by AFP.
It is still unknown what the purpose of flying Russian bombers is in the region near Japanese airspace.
"It's hard to say clearly what the purpose of the flight is... but the Russian military has been active in a sustainable manner in the region around Japan," he said.
Issues related to Russian military aircraft near Japan's borders have been discussed at a diplomatic meeting some time ago.
This diplomatic discussion also includes Japan which says Russian fighter jets entered the territory of its airspace in September 2024. However, Russia denies this.
