JAKARTA - North Korea launched several missiles, allegedly short-range ballistics, heading to the East Sea on Tuesday, the South Korean military said.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said they detected the launch at around 9:30 a.m. from the Ganggye area in Jagang Province, North Korea.

"In preparation for additional launches, our military has strengthened monitoring and vigilance, while continuing to share information about North Korean missiles with the United States and Japan as well as maintaining a full readiness attitude," the JCS said, quoted by The Korea Times January 14.

In Japan, government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said no damage was reported in Japan's territory and the exclusive economic zone after the launch, quoted by Kyodo News.

Tuesday's launch marked the provocation of the two Pyongyang regimes this year, after firing what it claims is a hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile on January 6.

In a year-end party meeting, North Korea said it would implement a "heavyest" countermeasure against the United States, claiming military cooperation between South Korea, the US and Japan has grown into a "military bloc for aggression."
