DIY - The Regency Government (Pemkab) of Bantul, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) temporarily closed the Imogiri Animal Market for two weeks from January 14-27, 2025 to suppress the spread or transmission of mouth and nail disease (PMK) in cattle, especially cows.

"Conducting a temporary closure of the operation of the Imogiri Animal Market for 14 days, starting from January 14 to 27," said Head of the Bantul Food and Agriculture Security Service (DKPP) Joko Waluyo while monitoring the closing of the Imogiri Animal market, Tuesday, January 14, as reported by Antara.

According to him, the closure of the Imogiri Animal Market, which was then carried out by disinfectant spraying of all facilities in the market area, followed the increase in the PMK outbreak in the Bantul area.

"Until now, in Bantul, there are 322 cattle infected with PMK, 32 dead cows and two forced cuts. We hope that the closure of the Imogiri Animal market can break the chain of the spread of the PMK virus," he said.

The head of the Bantul DKPP said that the high number of livestock traffic at the Imogiri Animal Market was said to be one of the factors in the spread of the virus that attacks the animal's mouth and nails.

"This market often receives livestock from outside Bantul Regency. Most of the livestock here come from outside the region, so this closure is very important to prevent further virus spread," he said.

He also said, as part of prevention, Bantul BPBD also carried out comprehensive disinfectant activities in all Imogiri Animal Market facilities, in the hope of sterilizing the market area from potential viruses.

He further said, before the PMK outbreak, the Imogiri Animal Market had transactions between 600 and 700 cows every day. However, in the last few days, the number of livestock traded has decreased drastically to around 50.

"The traders have begun to realize the dangers of this PMK. Hopefully, with the temporary closure of this animal market, the spread of the virus can be stopped," said Joko Waluyo.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Animal Market, Imogiri Turadi, said that prior to the closing of the animal market, his party had coordinated with the heads of livestock associations as well as blantik or cow traders regarding the closure of this animal market.

"The closure of this animal market is carried out en masse for all types of livestock, both goats, sheep, and cows. Two markets in the future, hopefully we can clean from PMK," he said.
