TNBTS Closes The Mount Semeru Climbing Line Again

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center (TNBTS) decided to temporarily close the Mount Semeru climbing route on January 2-16, 2025 due to extreme weather conditions that could potentially occur in early 2025.

"Based on the consideration of extreme weather conditions in early 2025, the TNBTS Center temporarily closed the Semeru climbing route on January 2-16, 2025," said Head of TNBTS Center Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraja as reported by ANTARA, Monday, December 30.

The temporary closure of the Mount Semeru climbing route was officially announced by the TNBTS Center through the Announcement Letter Number: PG.12/T.8/TU/KSA.5.1/B/12/2024.

He explained that the step to again close the Mount Semeru climbing route was the result of field evaluation.

The activity of climbing departures is most recently carried out on December 31, 2024 and the last return is January 1, 2025.

"This decision is made as an anticipatory measure to avoid unwanted things, ensure the safety and comfort of visitors," he said.

Rudi hopes that the entire community can understand the reasons behind the decisions that have been taken by his side.

"We hope that all prospective visitors comply with this announcement and do not carry out illegal climbing activities," he said.

Separately, the Head of Administration for the TNBTS Center, Septi Eka Wardhani, confirmed that on September 2-16, none of the people had purchased entrance tickets for the Mount Semeru hiking trail.

"(The climbing ticket of Mount Semeru) has not yet been ordered," he said.

The climbing route of Mount Semeru was closed for five years, before it was finally reopened by the TNBTS Center as of December 23, 2024.

The opening of the hiking trail was announced directly by the Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni, on Tuesday (24/12). The decision was also coordinated with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).

The climbing limit is applied, which is only up to the Ranu Kumbolo area. In addition, the daily quota provided is only 200 climbers and must be accompanied by the Registered Mount Semeru Guide Association (PPGST).
