Arab Parliament Urges World To Stop Fighting For Syrian Territory By Israel

JAKARTA - The Arab Parliament called on the international community to take steps to stop Israel's actions which were deemed to have captured Syrian territory on Saturday, December 14, 2024.

This statement was delivered in a session at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, as stated in the institution's official report.

The President of the Arab Parliament, Muhammad Al-Yamahi, appealed to all parties in Syria to prioritize national interests, maintain state institutions, and prioritize dialogue and wisdom in facing the great challenges facing the nation.

Al-Yamahi also called on the UN Security Council and the international community to immediately take concrete steps in condemning and stopping violations committed by Israel. He highlighted that Israel is taking advantage of the instability situation in Syria to claim more territory illegally.

The crisis in Syria deepened after Bashar al-Assad, who has led for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on December 8 as opposition groups seized the capital, Damascus. This incident ended the power of the Baath Party which has ruled since 1963.

Under these conditions, Israel stepped up airstrikes targeting military sites, which are considered violations of Syrian sovereignty. In addition, Israel also withdrew the 1974 release agreement and deployed its troops to the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights, the territory it has occupied since 1967. This move drew criticism from the United Nations and Arab countries.

Regarding Palestine, Al-Yamahi criticized the international community for its failure to take action to protect the Palestinian people. He said that for more than a year, Palestinians have faced unprecedented genocide and massacres in modern history.

Al-Yamahi urged the world parliament and independent countries to pressure their respective governments to implement the decision of the Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh last November.

The decision includes the termination of Israel's presence at the UN General Assembly and related agencies, as well as the suspension of Israeli membership in international and regional parliamentary organizations.

He also called for the activation of economic boycotts against Israel, including those supporting it financially and militarily to commit violence against Palestinian civilians.

Arab parliament also plans to implement a parliamentary diplomacy strategy to establish communication with parliaments in various countries that do not yet recognize Palestinian sovereignty. Al-Yamahi invites lawmakers around the world to urge their respective governments to immediately give recognition to Palestine, as a form of support for the rights of the Palestinian people.
