JAKARTA - A federal congressman was killed on Monday night in the state of Veracruz, Gulf Coast of Mexico. This incident is the latest murder in the country's outbreak of political violence.

The Attorney General's Office Veracruz confirmed the death of Benito Aguas, a member of the ruling left-wing government coalition in the lower house of Congress consisting of 500 people.

Another man identified as Agustin Linares was also found dead at the scene, according to the attorney general's office. The investigation into the alleged murder is ongoing.

Local media reported that Aguas was shot several times in the mountain city of Zongolica in Veracruz. He died of his injuries.

"We believe that a relevant investigation will be carried out so that justice is upheld," lower house chairman Ricardo Monreal wrote in a post on social media.

Aguas is a member of Mexico's Green Party, part of a ruling coalition led by Morena Party President Claudia Sheinbaum, who took office in October.

Sheinbaum said she had instructed security officials to cooperate with governor Veracruz to ensure justice in this case.

"We are very sorry for what happened," he said.

Mexico has experienced a wave of violence with hundreds of people killed in the intra-kartel war in western Sinaloa state, and frequent violence elsewhere in the country where gangs are fighting for favorable smuggling routes and other criminal acts.

Politicians are often targeted, and dozens of people were killed ahead of last June's election.

The assassination of a mayor in the southern Mexican state of Gu airing, days after he took office in October sparked outrage and doubts over Sheinbaum's security policy.
