JAKARTA - The Lorenz National Park Office monitors the condition of the snow that continues to melt in Puncak Cartenz, Central Papua Province.

Head of the Lorenz National Park Office, Manuel Mirino, said that Puncak Cartenz entered the work area of TN Lorenz so that the snow in that place was continuously monitored by his party.

"Monitoring related to the conditions and presence of snow that continues to melt is carried out through satellite imagery because if it is to go down, it requires a large budget," Manuel said in Jayapura, Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Based on satellite imagery reports, according to Manuel, it was revealed that the area of snow had decreased and was currently recorded at around 18 hectares.

He expressed concern that global warming would result in a continuous decline in the snow stretch at Puncak Cartenz and impact the ecosystem in the region.

If it continues to shrink, Manuel said, it is feared that not only the ecosystem in Puncak Cartenz will be affected, but also the people of the area.

"The impacts caused in addition to the extinction of habitats and plants can also cause drought," said Manuel Mirino.

He said that the Lorenz TN covering an area of about 2.3 million hectares covers 10 districts in three provinces in Papua, namely Central Papua Province including Mimika, Paniai, Puncak Jaya, Puncak, and Intan Jaya, Papua Province, Mountains covering Jayawijaya Regency, Lanny Jaya, Yahukimo, and Nduga, as well as South Papua Province, namely Asmat Regency.

"The Lorenz TN area is indeed the largest in Indonesia and has its own characteristics because from lowlands to the presence of snow in Puncak Cartenz," said Head of the Lorenz TN Center, Manuel Mirino.
