Khofifah Proudly Reog Ponorogo Recognized As Cultural Heritage By UNESCO

SURABAYA - Governor of East Java 2019-2024 Khofifah Indar Parawansa, expressed his gratitude and pride after the art of Reog Ponorogo was officially included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List (WBTb) in the category In Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

This determination was announced in the 19th Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage session which took place at Asunci totaling, Paraguay, on December 3, 2024.

"Alhamdulillah, this determination is proof that Reog Ponorogo is an original Indonesian art, especially from Ponorogo, East Java. This art is rich in philosophy, tradition, and history. Even when played abroad, his name remains known as Reog Ponorogo," said Khofifah in Surabaya, Thursday, December 5.

Khofifah explained that this recognition was the result of the long struggle of society, artists and the government in preserving and promoting Reog Ponorogo at the international level. He also emphasized that this status provides legal protection and ensures that no other country can claim the art.

Before being recognized by UNESCO, Reog Ponorogo was listed as Indonesia's Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture in 2013. The determination by UNESCO has now further strengthened the position of Reog Ponorogo as a symbol of Indonesian culture that must be preserved.

Khofifah emphasized the importance of regenerating the artist Reog Ponorogo to ensure this tradition remains alive and relevant. According to him, the introduction to the younger generation through schools, art studios, and the cultural community needs to be improved.

"What is no less important is to ensure that the regeneration of Reog Ponorogo goes well. Existing art studios must continue to be strengthened. We also need to introduce Reog to the younger generation so that they love and preserve this art," he stressed.

In addition, the promotion of Reog Ponorogo to the global level is the main focus of the East Java government. Khofifah is optimistic that integrated management and massive promotions will have a significant impact, including in supporting the tourism sector and improving the economy of the people of East Java.
