Heavy Rain, Mother And Child Died Buried By Landslides In Cianjur

JAKARTA A landslide hit a house in Talagasari Village, Sindangbarang District, Cianjur Regency, which resulted in the death of two people, namely Yusma (26) and her 1-year-old son.

"The landslide occurred after heavy rains with a long duration flushed the area, so that the cliff behind the house collapsed and hit a family inside the house," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in his statement, Thursday, December 5.

A joint team with the community evacuated. Two victims were found dead buried by landslides and house materials.

The victims who died were Yusma (26) and her son Aqil (1). Meanwhile, another victim, Hilman, was injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.

BNPB reminded the public to increase awareness of potential landslides triggered by heavy rains, especially in areas with hilly soil contours or near cliffs.

Heavy rains with a long duration can make the soil structure saturated with water, increasing the risk of landslides. Abdul Muhari stated that landslides often occur during the rainy season with high intensity, as recently occurred in Cianjur, West Java.

"For people living around cliffs or slopes, it is important to pay attention to early signs of landslides, such as cracks in the ground, changes in the flow of water, or trees that are starting to tilt," said Abdul.

BNPB also appealed to local governments to ensure disaster mitigation measures have been implemented, including planting soil booster vegetation, making good drainage channels, and educating the public about the potential danger of landslides.

In addition, if heavy rains continue, residents are advised to immediately evacuate to safer places to avoid the risk of landslides. Preparedness is the main key to reducing the impact of disasters, especially in areas prone to landslides.
