Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Coumas said the decision was taken after reports in 13 areas that witnessed the hilal.
The Minister informed the determination of 1 Ramadan, after holding a session of Isbat attended by representatives of islamic organizations and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and several representatives from friendly countries.

Menag Yaqut also announced that tonight indonesian Muslims can already perform tarawih prayers.
"So tonight we can pray tarawih and later in the night we eat sahur, after dawn we start to perform fasting," he explained.
Menag Yaqut also congratulated the fasting to the Muslim brothers who performed.
"Let us create an atmosphere of Ramadan with solemnity, with tranquility without us being injured by things that keep us away from the wisdom of Ramadan. Happy fasting Ramadan," said Menag Yaqut.
