JAKARTA - Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah exchanged deadly attacks on Thursday as their war continued despite signs of progress in the ceasefire efforts proposed by the United States.

Israeli airstrikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs, while Hezbollah rockets hit northern Israel.

American mediator Amos Hochstein is in Israel for talks with Israeli officials in an attempt to reach a ceasefire that he said was "with you" during a visit to Beirut earlier this week.

This diplomacy marks the most serious attempt to end the conflict between Israel and the fully armed and Iran-backed Hezbollah.

In southern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes killed three people in Chaatiyeh village, about 10 km from the border, the Lebanese health ministry said.

In Israel, a 30-year-old man died when rocket fragments hit a playground in the northern city of Nahariya, Israel's MDA medical service said.

"The Israeli government does not maintain my security, my residents, or residents in the north (Israel). It is impossible to live in a situation like this," Nahariya Mayor Ronen Marelly told public broadcaster Kan.

The Israeli military said about 10 rockets were launched from Lebanon to Nahariya.

Most of the projectiles were intercepted and the fallen projectiles were identified, the military said.

Channel 12 says three rockets hit the coastal city.

The television station Hezbollah al-Manar, citing its correspondent, confirmed the rocket fire at Nahariya and the surrounding area.

The airstrike on the southern suburbs of Hezbollah's Beirut rocked the capital, causing thick plumes of smoke.

The Israeli military issued a statement on X before an attack warning their citizens was near Hezbollah's target and would take immediate action.

Most of the population has fled the area since Israel launched an attack in September.

The White House envoy Hochstein departed for Israel after declaring progress for two days of negotiations in Lebanon with officials including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, backed by Hezbollah.

Speaking before leaving Beirut, Hochstein said he would go to Israel to try to reach an agreement if possible.

The diplomacy aims to end the conflict that has caused major destruction in Lebanon since Israel began its attacks, launched airstrikes across the country and sent troops.
