15 Drug Prisoners In Pelembang Prison Involved For More Than 7 Years Moved To Nusakambangan

SOUTH Sumatra (Sumsel) Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) has again transferred prisoners (prisoners) from prisons (Lapas) in Palembang to Karanganyar Nusakambangan Prison, Cilacap Regency, Central Java (Central Java)

"The funds transferred in November 2024 amounted to 15 people, they were convicted of drug cases over seven years or classified as dealers," said Head of the South Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office, Ilham Djaya in Palembang, Thursday, November 21, confiscated by Antara.

Previously, from 2022 to 2023 his party had transferred 69 prisoners or correctional inmates (WBP) from a number of prisons in South Sumatra with the category of high-risk security to the Kambangan Cilacap Nusa Prison.

According to him, in order to maintain stability, security and conduciveness of the inmates, it is instructed to the ranks of prisons, state detention centers (rutan), and child-only development institutions (LPKA) in this area to transfer WBP to prisons in South Sumatra and outside the province.

This was done considering that the condition of prisons and detention centers in South Sumatra had exceeded the capacity of overcapacity and overcrowding, it was necessary to distribute and transfer prisoners to prisons that were not too crowded.

Based on data as of November 2024, the number of inmates spread across 20 prisons, detention centers and South Sumatra LPKA has reached 15,755 people, exceeding the capacity of prison/rutan capacity, which ideally only for 7,088 people.

Total 'overcapacity' reached 122 percent with the occupants of general criminal cases of around 5,200 people, and special crimes of 9,000 people.

"The majority of the residents are narcotics cases, reaching 60 percent, based on the data, it is necessary to evenly distribute the number of inmates for early detection and avoid disturbances in security and order," said Kakanwil Ilham.

Following up on the direction of the Head of the South Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office, the Head of the Palembang Class I Red Eye Prison, Johannes has transferred 15 high-risk inmates to the Karanganyar Super Maximum Security (SMS) Prison on Nusakambangan Island, Cilacap, Central Java, Wednesday (20/11) in the morning.

Class II A Special Prison Karanganyar is the third super tight security prison on Nusakambangan Island, after Batu Prison and Pasir Putih Prison.

The Karanganyar prison is used to ground high-risk inmates, namely drug convicts and terrorism convicts.

He explained that the transfer of prisoners to his prison was in accordance with the SOP, starting with the examination of the body and the installation of chains and handcuffs.

The transfer process was also escorted by members of the Brimob Corps of the South Sumatra Police.

"The transfer of prisoners to Nusakambangan, known for its strict supervision, is expected to be an effective step in maintaining the integrity of prisons and breaking the chain of drug networks in prisons," Johannes said.
