JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal highlighted the arrest of 11 people who have now been named suspects in the online gambling case (judol). He supports efforts to eradicate judol considering that this practice has a very large social impact.

Eradication of online gambling is a must because it is very disturbing in our social, national and state life. The DPR supports every effort made to eradicate judol," said Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, Friday, November 1.

Cucun also appreciated the Polda Metro Jaya for arresting 11 suspects who were involved in organizing judol activities, of which of these 11 suspects came from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi).

"This is what we deeply regret about how judol has infiltrated the state institution. Police steps that do not hesitate to arrest individuals from government institutions who are involved in the judol network must continue, including by other law enforcement officers," he said.

The modus operandi of the suspects arrested is to abuse their authority. The suspects actually have the task of monitoring to block online gambling sites.

However, the authority given was actually abused by the suspects because they would not block the judol sites whose managers were still recognized. In fact, to smooth out their actions, the suspects hired a shophouse to be used as a special office which they refer to as a satellite office'.

Cucun said that the eradication of online gambling must be carried out from upstream to downstream. He also reminded the importance of comprehensive and sustainable handling in overcoming the online gambling phenomenon.

"There should be no tolerance for those who facilitate online gambling, from wherever they come from and whatever their status. Law enforcement must be the same," said Cucun.

"Because the impact of this judol is very devastating and real, it erodes people's social, economic and cultural life. Those who are most affected by judol are actually the people at the grassroots," continued the DPR RI leader, coordinator of the community welfare sector (Kesra).

Cucun said online gambling has damaged the nation's ethics. Especially now that many children and teenagers have been involved in the online gambling trend.

Cucun also highlighted the many findings of psychological cases in children who are addicted to gadgets ranging from depression, anxiety, to anti-social.

"This is also due to judol. There are even cases of children who are desperate to steal to be able to play judol because the addictive impact is extraordinary. That's why the state should not allow the proliferation of judol because online gambling can slightly reduce the quality of Indonesia's young generation," he explained.

For this reason, Cucun appealed to educational units to participate in eradicating online gambling through massive education about the dangers of online gambling games and to improve achievement education programs so that children can reduce gadget playing activities.

"Of course, parental supervision is also an important factor here. Children must always be under surveillance when surfing the internet, especially since online gambling has started to enter many digital platforms," said Cucun.

Cucun also encourages elements of environmental devices such as RT/RW and residents to participate in supervising children around their homes.

The legislator from the West Java II electoral district also highlighted the online gambling phenomenon which has indeed caused the impact of derivatives, especially social problems in the community. Cucun said that increasing conflicts in the family is one of the main impacts of judol where tensions often increase due to financial problems and addictive behavior caused by online gambling.

"Online gambling often causes domestic disputes because in the end the money that should be to support families such as the daily needs of families and the fulfillment of children's nutrition actually runs out for judol," he said.

Based on the Government's report, 3 cities/districts were exposed or had the highest online gambling transactions in Indonesia, namely West Jakarta City, DKI Jakarta and Bogor City and Bogor Regency, West Java. The three regions also recorded high divorce rates. Divorce of many couples occurred due to online gambling bondage.

For example in Bogor, the local Religious Court noted that 496 married couples divorced throughout the first semester of 2024. One of the causes of the divorce is the behavior of the couple who is caught in judol. However, the factors causing divorce due to online gambling do not stand alone or as a single cause.
