BEKASI - The District Attorney's Office (Kejari) of Bekasi Regency, West Java has named a suspect in the alleged corruption of a local Deputy Chairman of the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) with the initials SL who is also the Chairman of the PDI-P Branch Leadership Council in the area.

Head of the Bekasi District Attorney's Office, Dwi Astuti Beniyati, said that SL was suspected of committing a criminal act of corruption in receiving gratuities or bribes from the person carrying out physical activities with the initials RS who had already been named a suspect.

"The determination of the suspect in this case is the development of the results of the investigation into the alleged bribery or gratuity committed by the suspect RS to the SL suspect," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, October 29.

He said the determination of the SL suspect was based on the adequacy of preliminary evidence obtained by the investigating prosecutor, including a number of documents and a white Mitsubishi Pajero trademark car and a BMW sedan.

The investigating prosecutor then detained SL for the next 20 days at the Class IIA Correctional Institution Pasirtanjung, Central Cikarang for investigation purposes.

Head of the Special Crimes Section of the Bekasi District Attorney's Office, Ronald Thomas Mendrofa, said that SL was a witness when he arrived at the prosecutor's office at 14.00 WIB to fulfill the first summons after the election period ended.

The investigating prosecutor then conducted an examination for more than three hours by asking 20 questions until he decided to raise the SL status from the witness to suspect and detained him at 18.00 WIB.

"The hospital received projects from SL with varying values, around Rp. 200-300 million per project. A total of 26 projects. The suspect admitted that the hospital was able to work on the project in exchange for being given a four-wheeled vehicle," he said.

The construction of this case began with a public report on August 7, 2023 which was followed up with a review as well as data collection and information by a team of investigating prosecutors.

The handling of this case was delayed due to the Attorney General's Instruction Number 6 of 2023 concerning Optimizing the Role of the Indonesian Prosecutor's Office in Supporting and Successfully Implementing Simultaneous General Elections in 2024.

The Attorney General's instruction was issued as a measure to anticipate the use of law enforcement as a practical political tool by certain parties in the 2024 General Election as well as a form of commitment to implementing the Attorney General's Memorandum Number 127 concerning Efforts to Minimize the Impact of Law Enforcement on Election Implementation.

The Bekasi District Attorney's Office interpreted the Attorney General's Instruction by referring to the General Election Commission Regulation Number 3 of 2022 concerning the final stages of holding the election on October 20, 2024.
