Iraq denounced Israel's use of its airspace to attack Iran in a letter of protest to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council on Monday.

Government spokesman Bassim Alawadi said in a statement the letter denounced "an open violation of the Zionist entity against Iraqi airspace and sovereignty, by using it to carry out an attack on Iran on October 26," quoted from Daily Sabah Oct. 28.

Alawadi said Iraq's Foreign Ministry would also stage "this violation" in talks with the United States, Israel's close allies and major weapons providers.

Israel on Saturday launched airstrikes against a military location in Iran, which poses a further regional escalation after more than a year of Gaza war and a month of Israeli-Hezbollah war in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli attack was in retaliation for an Iranian missile strike on October 1, which was in retaliation for the killing of Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah leaders and a Revolutionary Guard commander.

The Iranian military said several Israeli aircraft had fired "small numbers of long-range missiles" within US patrol Iraqi airspace.

Israel is known to have carried out airstrikes against a number of targets in Iran on Saturday. It was said to be in retaliation for Tehran's attack on October 1.

Images and videos on social media from Iraq appear to show the missile booster part used by Israel. The missile fragments appear to have fallen in the northern region of Baghdad, quoted from The Times of Israel.

Baghdad is known to have close ties to Tehran, but also a strategic partnership with Washington, which has troops in Iraq as part of the international anti-Daesh coalition.

While the Iraqi government has been trying to avoid being dragged into an escalating regional conflict, several pro-Iran factions have launched attacks on US forces in the region, claiming responsibility for drone attacks on Israel.

One of Tehran's most influential groups, Katab Hezbollah, on Sunday condemned Israel's use of Iraqi airspace to attack Iran as a "dangerous precedent."

They accused the United States of involvement in Israeli attacks, and warned both sides of a response to this "aggression".
