YOGYAKARTA - Several Arab countries are known to have close ties with the United States, either through military, economic, and diplomatic cooperation.

So are there any Arabic countries that are allies of the United States?

Amid the complex geopolitical dynamics of the Middle East, the alliance with Washington is an important strategy for a number of Arab countries to maintain security stability and strengthen their position in the region.

This article will review some Arab countries that become strategic allies of the United States and their role in maintaining balance in the region.

The US cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 1980 after Iranian students occupied the US embassy in 1979 and held more than 50 Americans hostage.

Then official relations with Syria were terminated in 2012 amid a civil war in Syria. Nonetheless, the US continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the country.

In 2020, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco signed the Abraham Accords, which officially formed diplomatic relations between the three countries and Israel.

This agreement is considered as progress in the so-called normalization' of relations, namely efforts to maintain official relations despite differences or potential tensions between them.

Since the United States has more relations with Middle Eastern countries than Israel, the US also acts as mediators in negotiations between Israel and other countries.

Reporting from the European Council on Foreign Relations page, there are two opposing coalitions in the Middle East forming rivalities that threaten to damage regional stability.

There was a confrontation between Iran-led networks, as well as a camp of traditional Western allies centered in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel.

Iranian rivals view Tehran's growing influence as a serious challenge. For Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran not only threatens their position in the region, but also has the potential to shake domestic stability through support for extremists Sunni and Shia.
