JAKARTA - South Korea for the first time showcased their monster missile in the commemoration of Armed Forces Day on Tuesday, as a marked warning of North Korea's nuclear and missile threat.

Two mobile missile launchers carrying Hyunmoo-5 were among the military equipment exhibited at a ceremony at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, just south of the capital, reported The Korea Times October 1.

The ground-to-ground ballistic missile, dubbed a monster for its size, has been shrouded in secrecy due to its strategic interests. The missile is known to carry a warhead weighing about 8 tons and capable of destroying an underground bunker.

South Korea has developed a series of Hyunmoo missiles, including ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. South Korea launched the Hyunmoo-4 during last year's Armed Forces Day ceremony. In comparison, the missile can only carry about two tons of payload.

During this year's ceremony, the 9-poros transporter launcher moved slowly across the runway, each carrying an estimated tube about 20 meters long, which appears to harbor "high-power" and "high-precision" missiles that are known to be targeted anywhere in North Korea.

In another show of force, a US B-1B heavy bomber flew over the airbase, alongside two F-15K jets, in a demonstration of US security commitments to South Korea. North Korea previously warned it would take "appropriate" action against the deployment of US strategic assets.

A total of about 5,000 troops and hundreds of military equipment were collected for the ceremony, marking the 76th anniversary of the country's arms forces this year.

Special operations forces showcased their infiltration skills while jumping from transport planes over air bases, while Apache attack helicopters fired flares and demonstrated avoidance maneuvers.

The military also showcased various air assets, including the KF-21 fighter aircraft currently under development and the F-35A stealth jet, while the Air Force's aerobatic Black Eagles team carried out a series of aerial maneuvers.

This year's ceremony comes as North Korea has stepped up tensions in recent weeks ahead of the upcoming US general election, exposing its uranium enrichment facility, launching ballistic missiles, and flying garbage-carrier balloons across the border.

The defense ministry said Tuesday's event was held to demonstrate its "extraordinary" ability to retaliate strongly against potential enemy provocations, supported by the country's three-axis prevention structure.

Officials said this year's ceremony also mobilized an expanded asset lineup that required cooperation in manned and unmanned operations, such as four-legged robots as well as unmanned submarines and surface vehicles.

It is known that the Land of Ginseng marks the anniversary of its military establishment to coincide with Armed Forces Day, which commemorates the service of military personnel and falls on October 1.
