JAKARTA - Indonesia is again running for non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2029-2030 period.

This was announced by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi when delivering her last speech at the 79th General Debate Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, Saturday.

"This nomination reflects our deep commitment to contributing to world peace and security," said Retno.

Indonesia has been elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council four times, first in 1973-1974, then 1995-1996, 2007-2008, and finally 2019-2020.

The Foreign Minister explained that global leadership was not inherited and did not just appear, did not fall from the sky, citing his remarks.

So that leadership must be achieved through joint efforts collectively. And, these efforts are in line with the essence of Indonesia's foreign policy, namely peace, justice, and humanity.

Indonesia has often criticized the current leadership of the Security Council, given that many global issues have failed to be resolved.

Call it a big issue of conflict in Palestine. Previously in different forums, Retno questioned the leadership of the Security Council to create peace.

"Security Council Reform is very necessary to ensure leadership for peace," said Retno.

Two ways that must be done in this reform: a more democratic decision-making mechanism and accommodating more votes from the world community, not just a handful of countries.
