JAKARTA - Russia strongly condemns cyberattacks through a massive explosion of pagers or simultaneous quarantine devices in Lebanon that kill civilians.

"We strongly condemn the unprecedented attack on Lebanon, which is friendly and its citizens. This is a gross violation of its sovereignty and a serious challenge to international law with the use of unconventional weapons," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, quoted from Tass, Wednesday, September 18.

He said Russia was sorry for the civilian casualties from the cyberattack and prayed for the injured to recover soon.

"We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and pray for a speedy recovery for those who are injured," he said.

Zakharova insists Russia considers the series of explosions of pagers as another form of hybrid war against Lebanon. "Which has affected thousands of innocent people," he added.

"Most likely the mastermind behind this high-tech attack deliberately wants to trigger a large-scale armed confrontation with the aim of provoking a major war in the Middle East," Zakharova continued.

According to him, with the background of increasing tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border, these irresponsible actions are full of very dangerous consequences. "Because it triggers a new escalation wave," he said.

Zakharova stressed that Russia urges all parties to exercise restraint and not take actions that further disrupt the military and political situation in the Middle East.

"A thorough investigation into this crime needs to be carried out and all those responsible must stand trial to ensure that this act of terrorism is not covered up, as has been done by Western countries regarding the investigation into the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosion," he concluded.

As is known, a massive explosion of pagers occurred in various parts of Lebanon on Wednesday, September 17, 2024.

Citing Al Jazeera, the Lebanese Ministry of Health revealed that the explosion of the pager simultaneously killed nine people and 2,750 others were injured.

The dead and injured were members of Hezbollah and civilians, including children. Hezbollah accused Israel of being behind the explosion.

The massive explosion of simultaneous pagers in Lebanon is touted as a cyberattack. Pager, who was previously planted with the explosive device, was reportedly brought to Lebanon for Hezbollah supporters in the spring of 2024.
