Floods Kill 33 People In Nigeria And Number Of Refugees Reach Tens Of Thousands

JAKARTA - Due to heavy rains for several days in northwestern Nigeria, it has caused a major flood that killed 33 people.

Launching ANTARA, Saturday, August 24, Head of the State Emergency Management Agency Haruna Mairinga, told Anadolu that heavy rains that fell continuously in Jigawa, known as states and agriculture, occurred from the middle of the week to the weekend. The natural phenomenon caused the bridge in the river to collapse, widespread floods and destruction in the affected areas.

"The number of victims who died as a result of flood incidents that occurred in 14 local government areas in Jigawa State has now reached 33 people," an increase from 28 earlier this week, he said.

He added that there were as many as "44,000 people who had lost their homes."

He also said the flood damaged 7,800 houses and inundated 10,337 hectares of agricultural land.

Thousands of people who lost their homes due to the flood are receiving medical treatment and food assistance in temporary shelters provided by the government, he said.
