Kamala Harris: President Biden And I Strive For Palestine To Realize Their Rights, Determine Their Own Fate

JAKARTA - Kamala Harris said on Thursday evening she and President Joe Biden were trying to get the war in the Gaza Strip to end soon, so that Palestine could realize its rights to determine its own destiny.

That was said by Harris on the final day of the Democratic Party National Convention which was held at the United Center, Chicago, after he officially announced his willingness to accept nominations as a presidential candidate for the party in the 2024 United States Presidential Election.

In his speech, Harris called for an end to the war in Gaza and fighting tyranny around the world, which is in stark contrast to Republican Donald Trump.

"In the eternal conflict between democracy and tyranny, I know where I stand and I know where the United States should be," Harris said, accusing Trump of approaching dictators.

On the final night, and most anticipated, from the convention, Harris, 59, attempted to redefine himself to America, as he and Trump entered the last 11 weeks of a very tight campaign.

After days of protests from Palestinian supporters who were disappointed for not getting a place to speak at the convention, Harris made a promise to secure Israel, take the hostages home from Gaza and end the war in the Palestinian enclave.

"Now is the time to finalize the hostage-taking and ceasefire deal," he said with cheers.

"What has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months has been devastating. So many innocent lives have been lost, people who are desperate and starving constantly run away for safety. This scale of suffering is heartbreaking," he said.

"President Biden and I are trying to end this war so that Israel is safe, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza is over and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination," he said.

"And I emphasize, I will always defend Israel's right to defend myself and I will always make sure Israel has the ability to defend itself," he added.

Harris emerged as a presidential candidate from the Democratic Party less than a month ago, when incumbent president Joe Biden (81) announced his resignation and expressed support for Harris.

Harris officially announced the acceptance of his candidacy by the Democratic Party on the final day of the Democratic National Convention.

The incumbent of the US Vice President became the first black woman and the first Asian-American to lead a major party. If elected, Harris will be the first woman and American president of Indian descent.

On that occasion, he vowed to become president to all Americans.
