Legislative Council Denies Revision Of Regional Head Election Law For PDIP Singles In Jakarta Gubernatorial Election

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the House of Representatives Legislation Body Achmad Baidowi dismissed allegations of material content for the revision of the Regional Head Election Law which was approved in level I discussions to tackle certain political parties in the 2024 Pilkada contestation.

"We don't want to tackle parties or anyone, especially Jakarta," said Awiek, his nickname, as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 21.

He emphasized that the Pilkada Bill applies to all Indonesian people.

"For all regions of Indonesia in 37 provinces and 38 provinces, actually because of Yogyakarta, there are also elections. All of them can use this law," he said.

Awiek also dismissed allegations that the Pilkada Bill was rolled out to smooth out certain candidates so that they could compete in the 2024 Pilkada.

He explained that the Pilkada Bill was rolled out because it was an emergency considering that registration for the 2024 Pilkada would be opened on 27 August.

"There is no specific way to pass certain candidates because we have the principle of an emergency. The 27th (August) has entered registration. So that legal balance does not occur, then legal political steps are taken as a reference for the implementation of the upcoming regional elections," he said.

"All Indonesians aged 30 years in February (2025) who will be entitled to nominate and qualify as candidates for governor or deputy governor candidate," he continued.

Meanwhile, Minister of Law and Human Rights Supratman Andi Agtas also dismissed accusations by the DPR and the government against violating the constitution because it was considered to annull the decision of the Constitutional Court through the revision of the Pilkada Law.

The former chairman of the DPR Baleg emphasized that the DPR and the government in discussing the revision of the Pilkada Law were based on the law on the authority of the legislators.

"I think everyone has a basis, who says the DPR has committed disobedience? The constitutional duties given by the Constitution have established the law, the legislative legislation is in parliament," he said.
