JAKARTA - More than 100 people have disappeared after the ship capsized in the western region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The ship carrying about 300 people was heading to the city of Nioki from Oshwe when it sank at around 7 pm local time (1800 GMT) on Sunday in the Kut area on the Lunnie River in Mai-Ndombe province, Jacques Nzenza Mongie, administrator of the region, told reporters.

"The duiaapal hit a tree trunk under the water and overturned," he said, citing the testimony of the survivors.

Nzenza said as of Tuesday evening, 20 bodies, including four women, had been found, and searches for some missing people were still ongoing.

The number of survivors is not yet certain, but local media reported that 43 people had been rescued.

Nkosobulani Lebon, governor of Mai-Ndombe province, expressed his condolences to the affected families and announced drastic steps would be taken to end the ship's crash.

The accident came two months after another ship capsized in June, killing more than 80 people in the Kwa River.
