JAKARTA - The United States has imposed sanctions on former Haitian president Michel Joseph Martelly for drug trafficking cases.

The US Treasury Department said Martelly abused its influence to facilitate the trade in dangerous drugs, including cocaine, aimed at the United States.

The US said Martelly was also working with Haitian drug smugglers, sponsoring many gangs and was involved in laundering proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs.

"Today's actions against Martelli emphasize the important and destabilizing roles he and other corrupt political elites play in perpetuating the ongoing crisis in Haiti," said the Acting Deputy Minister of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the Treasury, Bradley Smith, in a statement.

"The United States, together with our international partners, is committed to eradicating parties facilitating drug trafficking, corruption, and other illicit activities that trigger terrible gang violence and political instability," he added.

Sanctions decided on Tuesday frozen all of Martelly's assets in the US and generally banned Americans from dealing with him.

The gang war has displaced more than 578,000 Haitians, while nearly 5 million people are nearly half of the 11.7 million population facing acute hunger, and 1.6 million of them are at risk of starvation, the United Nations said.

Armed gangs have formed a broad alliance while committing massive killings, kidnappings for ransom, and sexual violence.
