JAKARTA - British Foreign Minister David Lemmy will travel to Israel in an effort to prevent a major war in the Middle East.

This visit by Lemmy was reported by Sky News citing diplomatic sources.

Britain's foreign ministry did not confirm any travel plans for Lemmy. But gave a statement saying Britain urged its Middle East partners to "choose peace".

"We are at an important moment for global stability. Hours and days to come can determine the future of the Middle East," Lemmy said, repeating his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

"The UK will continue to use every diplomatic effort to realize the ceasefire," he added.

A new round of negotiations on the Gaza ceasefire is underway in the Qatar capital, Doha, on Thursday afternoon, in a bid to end 10 months of fighting in the Palestinian enclave and repatriate 115 Israeli hostages and foreigners.

The talks came as Iran prepared to retaliate against Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.
