JAKARTA - The United Nations said South Sudan was not ready to hold its first general election (election) in December 20234 after independence.
Citing AP, Thursday 15 August, the UN's main envoy in South Sudan, Nicholas Haysom said politicians in the country were discussing whether a vote should be held this year.
Haysom told the UN Security Council that the post-independence situation in South Sudan was an obstacle to holding elections on December 22, 2024.
The election schedule was previously set by the country's National General Elections Commission last month.
The vote, which will be the first since South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after a long conflict was one of the important parts of the peace agreement signed five years ago.
In the agreement, elections are meant to attract the world's newest country out of a civil war largely based on ethnic divisions.
