UN Special Reporter Says Israel's Accountability Day Will Arrive Soon

JAKARTA - The UN Special Reporter on the right to proper housing, Baskrishnan Rajagopal, said he was confident that the day of responsibility for Israel would soon arrive.

He conveyed this in a press statement on the sidelines of the conference "Reassessing the Post-Gaza International Law", organized by the Faculty of Law, Bo fireazi University in Istanbul.

Rajagopal said Israel would eventually face significant accountability, driven by the findings of Israel's International Court investigative reports and declining Israeli legitimacy.

"I am very confident that the day of the calculation will arrive for Israel, and I hope that behavior changes will occur due to the findings of the ICJ report and the loss of legitimacy," he said.

UN experts highlight a marked increase in mobilization against extremist Zionism in Israel over the past fifteen years, saying although direct accountability may not come soon, a change in Israel's policy is imminent.

Rajagopal called for various actions against Israel, including economic sanctions and trade bans. He questioned why the international community had not taken firmer action, recording Israel's alleged violations of UN principles and its treatment of UN personnel and organizations.

"Why don't we overthrow him? That goes against all the ideals of the UN Charter, killing UN staff wherever he wants and labeling UNRWA a terrorist organization," he said.

Rajagopal argues that although the UN Security Council's actions are hampered by American veto, the General Assembly has the potential to act by imposing sanctions or arms embargoes. He urged Global South, which is the majority in the General Assembly, to take advantage of its power within the framework of the United Nations.

"The General Assembly has this power," he said.

"The question is: Why are countries in the southern hemisphere, which are the majority and condemn Israel, not taking advantage of the forces they have in the UN Charter?" he said.
