PARIS - France suspects left-wing extremists were behind the sabotage of the SNCF train network last week which coincided with the Olympics opening ceremony.

"We have identified the profiles of several people," French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told France 2 TV.

There is no detailed explanation about the profile of the alleged perpetrator of the rapid train sabotage. But the modus operandi called Darmanin has similarities with the characteristics of left-wing extremists.

As previously reported, SNCF said its rail line was damaged ahead of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

"SNCF became a victim of several malicious acts carried out simultaneously at LGV Atlantique, North & East," the company said on X, Friday, July 26.

The company said the fire was deliberately set to damage the facility. Fast train traffic is heavily disrupted on several routes, the company said while asking passengers to postpone the trip.

Local media reported that around 800,000 passengers were affected and traffic would not resume operations at one of Paris' main stations, Montparnasse, at least until 13.00 p.m. local time (18.00 p.m. local time).
