JAKARTA - Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna Laoly conducted a direct inspection of the smart prison system and control room at the Class IIA Ngaseman Correctional Institution (Lapas) on Nusakambangan Island.

During his working visit to Nusakambangan Island, Menkumham Yasonna H. Laoly was accompanied by the Acting Director General of Corrections Reynhard Silitonga, Head of the Central Java Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office Tejo Harwanto, as well as the Primary High Leader and Main Expert Community Advisor in the Directorate General of Corrections.

Menkumham Yasonna also monitors CCTV surveillance systems at 187 prison points and controls the door security system centrally, increasing security and efficiency in prisons.

Prisons with this maximum level of security have been operating since early 2024 and accommodated 98 Correctional Inmates. They are placed in two blocks, namely Block A with 32 rooms each inhabited by three people, and Block B with 32 rooms each inhabited by five people.

"I ask officers to instill discipline and integrity in carrying out the duties and functions of Corrections," said Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly in a written statement published by VOI during his visit to the Class IIA Ngaseman Prison on Nusakambangan Island on Saturday, July 20.

In addition, Yasonna also reviewed the construction of the Kumbang Prison with an ongoing medium safety level. This prison will later accommodate 496 people and construction must be completed by 2025.

"Not only facilities that must be prepared properly, but also the readiness and maturity of officers who will serve in the prison, as part of the government's efforts to improve an effective and efficient correctional system," he said.

Separately, Menkumham Yasonna also monitors the waters around Nusakambangan Island by driving the Speed Boat Pengayoman 5. This activity is carried out to strengthen security and detect early potential disturbances in security and order.

"We must protect Nusakambangan, protect its natural resources, and prevent exploitation by irresponsible parties," he concluded.

He added that all Technical Implementation Units on Nusakambangan Island routinely carry out joint patrols to ensure the island remains conducive as Correctional Island.

Currently, on Nusakambangan Island there are 11 prisons with various safety levels: Nirbaya Open Prison and Prison (minimum security), Permisan Prison and Yellow Flower Prison (medium security), Iron Prison, Narcotics Prison, Gladakan Prison, and Ngaseman Prison (maximum security), as well as Batu Prison, White Sand Prison, and Karanganyar Prison (super maximum security).

"The construction of a new prison on Nusakambangan Island is expected to reduce overcapacity, both on Nusakambangan Island and in other regions in Indonesia," said Yasonna Laoly.
