European Parliament Affirms Support For Ukraine To Win

JAKARTA - In the midst of a war between Russia and Ukraine, the European Parliament on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment, emphasizing firm support for Kiev until a landslide victory was reached.

In a resolution adopted during the plenary session of parliament in favor of 495, 137 opposed, and 47 abstained, newly elected Members of the European Parliament (MEP) outlined their first official position on the conflict, emphasizing the importance of independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized limits.

The resolution calls for the European Union to maintain and expand sanctions against Russia and Belarus, ensuring effective law enforcement and prevent enforcement by EU-based companies, third parties, or other countries.

MEP expressed strong confidence that Russia should provide financial compensation for the damage caused to Ukraine. They welcomed the bloc's initiative to use revenue from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine's war efforts and advocate a strong legal framework to confiscate the assets.

As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, July 17, the European Parliament also praised the results of a recent NATO summit, and reaffirmed Ukraine's way of becoming a NATO member as irreversible.

The MEP urged the EU and its member states to increase military support for Ukraine and asked the European Commission to propose long-term financial assistance for Ukraine's reconstruction, by utilizing the newly formed Ukrainian Facility.

In addition, Parliament strongly condemns Russia's missile attack on Okhmadyt's children's hospital in the Ukrainian capital and criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's recent visit to Russia.

The resolution describes Orban's actions as a "discrete violation of EU agreements and joint foreign policy," which forced Hungary to face its effects.
