JAKARTA - A suspected serial killer was arrested in Kenya following the discovery of several bodies in a mine in Nairobi. Police said the perpetrator admitted to killing 42 women including his wife.

The perpetrator named Collins Jumaisi, a 33-year-old man who lives near a mine in the Mukuru neighborhood in the south of the capital, was arrested on Monday, July 15 morning.

The police chief, Douglas Kanja Kirocho, said nine bodies had been found so far from the mine.

"It is clear that we are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who does not respect human life," said Amin Mohamed, head of the Criminal Investigation Directorate.

Jumaisi admitted he killed 42 women and dumped their bodies at the mine, Mohamed said.

The murder took place in 2022, starting with Jumaisi's wife, and the last one occurred on July 11, Mohamed said in a televised statement.

At Jumaisi's house, the police found several cell phones, identity cards, sharp weapons used to cut victims, industrial rubber gloves, rolls and a dozen nylon sacks similar to where the victim was found.

A large crowd gathered to witness the remains of the bodies, many of whom were cut into pieces, taken from mines on weekends, and some of them involved clashes with police.

Many local residents were angry with rumors of the bodies linked to alleged kidnapping of young protesters by security forces during recent street demonstrations.

So far the police have provided no indication that the bodies found had anything to do with the demonstration.

A government spokesman shared a police statement on X on Friday saying authorities were analyzing samples to identify victims.
