Guaranteeing Journalistic Duties, LKBPH PWI Commitment To Facing Press Disputes

JAKARTA - The Central Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Consultant for Aid and Law Enforcement (LKBPH) can coordinate with the Press Council and other state institutions to provide legal assistance for press disputes, especially to PWI members who experience legal problems in carrying out journalistic duties

This was said by the Deputy Secretary General of the Central PWI, Raja Pane, receiving a visit from the West Sumatra (West Sumatra) PWI Management on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. The visit was chaired by the elected West Sumatra PWI Chair, Widya Navies.

During the visit, Raja Pane welcomed the group from PWI West Sumatra. Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Central PWI LKBPH, Naek Pangaribuan, and other administrators were also present.

Raja Pane explained that the establishment of the PWI LKBPH was not only a department.

"LKBPH PWI can coordinate with the Press Council and other state institutions to provide legal assistance for press disputes, especially for PWI members who experience legal problems in carrying out journalistic duties," said Raja Pane.

Naek Pangaribuan added that the PWI LKBPH was formed based on the mandate of the Congress in Bandung and strengthened in the 2024 HPN. "This institution is important to provide legal assistance when there is a press dispute and protect journalists in carrying out journalistship duties," explained Naek.

"Moreover, we will see the incident in North Sumatra, where journalists experienced terror and persecution. That's what this institution is important for."

The chairman of the West Sumatra PWI, Widya Navies, welcomed the existence of the PWI LKBPH. "PWI members in West Sumatra are very enthusiastic about the PWI LKBPH. Many have asked about the terms and conditions for the formation of the PWI LKBPH," said Navis.

During the meeting, it was also discussed about the correlation between the West Sumatra PWI LKBPH and the Central PWI LKBPH. At the end of the meeting, Widya Navies hoped that there would be further clues regarding the formation of the PWI LKBPH.

"Maybe technical instructions and instructions for implementing the formation and main duties of the PWI LKBPH so that we in the regions understand better," he said.

This visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between PWI West Sumatra and PWI Center in providing protection and legal assistance to journalists throughout Indonesia
