Heavy Rain Triggers Floods And Landslides In India, 11 People Died

JAKARTA - Heavy rains that triggered floods and landslides in India killed 11 people.

In the state of Uttar Pradesh, nine people have died in incidents of rain-related in the past 24 hours, according to an official bulletin quoted by Reuters on Tuesday, July 2.

Two people died on Monday in the state of Assam, which has been hit by the second wave of flooding since June 16. There were more than 8,000 people displaced.

Kaziranga National Park was also submerged in water, with more than half of its 233 camps flooded.

In neighboring Bangladesh, the flood situation is rapidly deteriorating due to continuous rain and the flow of water from upstream from India, causing tens of thousands of people to be affected, officials said.

Authorities used loudspeakers in the southeastern region to warn residents of the high risk of landslides, triggered by heavy rains, and offered assistance in the evacuation, government official Abul Bashar Mohammed Fakruzzaman said.

The eastern region of India and Bangladesh has been hit by floods in the past two months, causing millions of people to be displaced, and weather authorities predict the situation could worsen.
