Jakarta Air Quality Sunday 23 June, Third Worst In The World

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta air quality, on Sunday, June 23, 2024, is categorized as unhealthy and the third worst in the world with 164.

Based on official IQAir page data monitored in Jakarta, Sunday, at 05.40 WIB, the air quality index (AQI) in Jakarta is at 164, with a smooth particle number (particulate matter / PM) 2.5 at a concentration rate of 74 micrograms per cubic meter.

This concentration is equivalent to 14.8 times the annual air quality guide value of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The air quality monitoring site with the latest time, noted that Jakarta is the city with the worst third-ranked air quality in the world after Beijing (China) 253 and Kinshasa (Kongo) 176.

People are recommended to avoid outdoor activities, wear masks while outside, close windows to avoid dirty outside air and turn on air filters.

Apart from Jakarta, the air quality monitoring site also noted that a number of other major cities in Indonesia were categorized as unhealthy, including South Tangerang (Banten) at 194, Medan City (North Sumatra) 142, and Bandung (West Java) 110.

Meanwhile, data from the Environmental Information and Hygiene System of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Environment Agency noted that only one of the five monitoring points was categorized as moderate, four of which were unhealthy for PM2.5 air pollution.

From the existing data for monitoring points located in Kelapa Gading at 115, Kebon Jeruk at 106, Lubang Buaya 105, Jagakarsa 101 and Roundabout HI 95.

Moderate categories mean air quality levels that do not affect human or animal health but affect sensitive plants.

Meanwhile, the unhealthy category is the level of air quality which is detrimental to humans or groups of animals that are sensitive or can cause damage to plants or aesthetic values.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) coordinated with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to modify Jakarta's weather.

"We are coordinating with BNPB and BMKG regarding the direction of the Acting Governor to carry out weather modification technology (TMC) in Jakarta, along with Jakarta's declining air conditions in recent times," said Head of BPBD DKI Jakarta Isnawa Adji.

The Jakarta area and its surroundings, said Isnawa, have done TMC to overcome extreme weather conditions and air pollution.

"As at the end of 2022, we are coordinating with a joint TMC team consisting of BMKG, BRIN, BNPB and the Indonesian Air Force to seed salt in the Jakarta area to overcome the potential for extreme weather that occurs," he said.
