Three Villages Submerged By Floods In South Sorong, Residents Refuge To The Forest

JAKARTA - Three villages in North Kokoda District, South Sorong (South Sorong), Southwest Papua have been flooded since June 14. Residents who consist of at least 330 housing units chose to flee to the nearest forest and hamlet.

North Kokoda District Head Leonard Takoye in Teminabuan, Tuesday, June 18, said the three villages affected by the flood were Udaga Village, Kayobiro Village and Adonan Village.

"People are now evacuating to the nearest forest and hamlet to seek protection from further flooding," Leonard said as quoted by ANTARA.

He said the floods that submerged the residents' settlements had now begun to recede, but the community had not been able to return.

"By living in the forest, people can look for food, because if they choose to survive, there is no food supply," he said.

He said his party was trying to build communication with the Sorsel Regency Government (Pemkab) to take the next step.

"The flood has submerged hundreds of houses since last June 14 until now, but it has begun to recede," he said.

He also appealed to the people of Nebes Village to anticipate the spread of flooding.

"Floods are likely to spread. Therefore, people in nine villages in Nebes should be vigilant," said Leonard.
