UN Agency Welcomes Wave of Recognition of Palestinian State

JAKARTA - The Committee for the Implementation of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) which is under the UN General Assembly welcomes the growing wave of recognition of the Palestinian state.

In a statement the agency said it warmly welcomed the recent recognition of the State of Palestine by Barbados, the Bahamas, Ireland, Jamaica, Norway, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.

"The Bureau commends the determination of these countries to uphold and advance the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and provide hope amidst the devastating war in Gaza and increasing threats to the survival of the Palestinian people," the agency said in a statement, reported by WAFA, May 29.

"This expansion of recognition follows the UN General Assembly resolution of 10 May 2024, which reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and an independent Palestinian State," the statement continued.

The agency further said that these developments echo the growing international voices demanding equal rights and self-determination as enshrined in the UN Charter, and for an end to Israel's 57-year occupation of the Palestinian territories.

The bureau also urged the UN Security Council to align with the consensus at the UN General Assembly and recommend recognition of Palestine's full membership in the UN.  In the UN SMU voting last May 10, 146 countries supported Palestine becoming a full member of the UN, 25 countries abstained and 9 countries refused, out of a total of 193 SMU member countries.

"The Bureau welcomes the International Court of Justice's Temporary Measures Order of 24 May 2024, which follows up on the Interim Measures indicated on 26 January 2024 and 28 March 2024, which ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive on Rafah, allowing for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and access to Gaza as mandated by a UN investigation," the statement said.

Deploring the military operation in Rafah, the bureau also called for an investigation and holding accountable those responsible for gross violations of international law, humanitarian law and human rights.

"The Bureau calls on the international community to undertake urgent and coordinated efforts aimed at ending the Israeli occupation and achieving a just, lasting and peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue, in accordance with international law, relevant United Nations (UN) resolutions , as well as the Arab Peace Initiative, to end this historic and grave injustice," the statement read.
