Medan City Government Postpones Increase In Waste Retribution

The Medan City Government, North Sumatra, has postponed the increase in waste retribution rates by returning the amount of old waste levies.

"The mayor heard and paid attention to complaints and the aspirations of the people who objected to the increase in waste levies. On that basis, he postponed the increase in levies," said Head of the Medan City Environment Agency Muhammad Husni as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, May 27.

He said the Medan City Regional Regulation (Perda) Number 1 of 2024 concerning Regional Taxes and Regional Retribution which regulates the amount of waste retribution is divided into three categories.

Each category is determined according to the location of the house from the city center to the edge of the city which is adapted to the road of a residence.

For houses living in the city center on the main road, the amount of waste retribution is determined at Rp. 148,225 per month, while households on the edge of the main road are Rp. 59,290 per month.

The revision of the Medan City Regulation Number 6 of 2015 concerning Waste Management has increased by around 500 percent of waste levies.

"For this complaint, the mayor took steps that sided with the people of Medan City," he said.

Husni explained that the Medan City Government would submit a postponement of the increase in waste retribution rates to members of the Medan City DPRD.

"We believe and believe that the members of the council will support this policy in favor of the community," he said.

In addition, his party also asked each region of the capital city of North Sumatra Province to optimize waste collection.

"The increase in waste retribution rates was postponed and in line with that the old tariff was reimposed by optimizing collection," said Husni.

According to him, optimizing this collection can be done by increasing the amount of mandatory retribution and maximizing cleaning services in each region.

"It is hoped that the optimization of waste retribution collection can make a good contribution to local revenue," he said.

The Medan City Environment Agency also encourages relevant regional apparatus, including in sub-districts and sub-districts, to work together with the community to maintain the cleanliness of the city.

"The collaboration between the government and the community will certainly produce more optimal results," said Husni.
