JAKARTA - The Palestinian Authority said dozens of civilians died as a result of Israeli attacks on areas that were said to be refugee areas and Israel had previously said it was a safe zone.

The WAFA news agency, as quoted Monday, May 27, said local sources reported that at least 40 civilians were killed and others injured, mostly children and women, as a result of Israeli bombings with at least eight missiles against refugee tents in the northwest of the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza also said that most of those killed and injured were women and children, quoted by CNN.

"There are no hospitals in Rafah with enough capacity to accommodate these dead and injured victims, causing confusion among ambulance teams about where to move them," the ministry said in a previous statement.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that its crew was carrying a large number of bodies and injured victims after Israel targeted refugee tents in Rafah.

Gaza officials and PRCS said the targeted area of the attack was a refugee camp recently established near the warehouse of the United Nations Aid and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in northwest of Rafah.

PRCS confirmed that the people in the tent, mostly children and women, were burned alive. The target area, which was filled with thousands of refugees, was previously declared by Israel as a safe zone.

PRCS warned that hospitals were unable to handle this large number of casualties as a result of the intentional destruction of the health system in Gaza, underscoring that some of the victims were transported to an emergency health center.

It is known that the latest war in Gaza broke out after Palestinian militant group Hamas invaded Israel's southern region on October 7, 20223. Israeli calculations said it killed about 1,200 people and 250 others were held hostage

Previously, 81 Palestinians were killed and 223 injured as a result of the last 24 hours of Israeli attacks, bringing the death toll in the Palestinian enclave to 35,984 people and injuries to 80,643 people since the Palestinian-Israeli conflict erupted in October 2023, local health authorities said Sunday, quoted from Xinhua.
