JAKARTA - The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) is trying to solve acute problems related to fulfilling the ratio of the needs of specialist doctors in Indonesia by opening six study programs (prodi) at the main education provider hospital.

"One of the other problems in Indonesia is the distribution of specialist doctors. Almost 80 years of independent Indonesia has never been solved," said Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin in his statement through the Ministry of Health's Bureau of Communication and Public Services in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Saturday, May 4.

To be able to meet the needs of specialist doctors according to the ratio set by the World Health Organization (WHO) as much as 0.28 compared to 1,000 residents in Indonesia, Budi estimates it will take 15 years for Indonesia to fulfill it through the existence of 117 medical faculties.

Responding to this, the Ministry of Health through the Health Transformation program facilitates educational hospitals in 420 hospitals to educate more specialist doctors and doctors outside the university line.

"We have 3,000 hospitals, 420 hospitals as educational hospitals to educate more specialist doctors and doctors. Thus, the faster the fulfillment of specialist doctors and doctors throughout Indonesia," he said.

The launch of the Hospital-Based Specialist Specialist Education program is scheduled to take place on Monday (6/5) at the Children's Hospital and Mother Harapan Kita, West Jakarta.

Budi said the program would prioritize local male doctors as participants in specialist doctor education at educational hospitals.

"Later, the fulfillment of specialist doctors to all regions will be carried out together, both education through universities, and hospital-based education," he said.

At this early stage, said Budi, there were six specialist medical study programs at six major education provider hospitals, namely eye specialists, heart, child, nerve, orthopedic, and oncology.

The six educational hospitals in question are Mata Cicendo Hospital, Soeharso Ortopedi Hospital, National Brain Center Hospital (PON), Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Harapan Kita Hospital, and Harapan Kita RSPD.

Confirmed separately, the Head of the Communication and Information Bureau of the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said that the number of specialist doctors in Indonesia currently ranges from 48,785 people, the majority of whom are concentrated on the island of Java.

A number of areas with fewer than 100 specialist doctors are West Papua Province with zero specialist doctors, North Maluku 98 specialist doctors, and West Sulawesi 85 specialist doctors.
