North Sumatra Prosecutor's Office Demands Death Of 24 Defendants In Drug Cases In The Last 4 Months

North Sumatra (North Sumatra) High Prosecutor's Office (Kejati) demanded the death penalty of 24 defendants in drug cases during the period January to April 2024.

"The North Sumatra Prosecutor's Office with its jurisdiction includes 28 District Attorneys and nine Prosecutors' branches have demanded the death of 24 drug dealers," said Head of the Legal Information Section of the North Sumatra Prosecutor's Office, Yos A Tarigan, in Medan, Monday, April 29, as reported by Antara.

Yos said the death charges filed by the public prosecutor (JPU) were in the Medan Kejari eight defendants, the Asahan Kejari seven defendants, the Tanjung Balai Kejari four defendants, the Langkat Kejari one defendant, the Belawan Kejari one defendant, the Binjai Kejari one defendant and the Deli Serdang Kejari two defendants.

"The death penalty against drug dealers is expected to have a deterrent effect on the perpetrators, then dealers and other syndicates should think again about taking legal action with the death penalty," he said.

The determination is also based on Law Number 35 of 2009 which confirms that the punishment is appropriate for violators of serious drug crimes in the form of the death penalty.

"The crime of narcotics is a problem that is not easy and becomes an extraordinary type of crime, where with drugs circulating how many people have been victims, how many of our young generation have lost their future," said Yos.

The former Head of the Special Crimes Section of the Deli Serdang District Attorney's Office (Kejari) hopes that in the future this demand for death will be a lesson for the public not to do the same.

" preventive efforts are also always carried out through legal counseling in the prosecutor's program to enter school to introduce the law to the younger generation in the hope that this younger generation can recognize the law early and stay away from punishment so that it is not easily influenced, especially drugs," he said.
