JAKARTA - The death toll from flooding from heavy rains in Kenya has risen to 76, the country's government spokesman said.

"Since the beginning of this rain, starting March 1, 2024, we have deeply regretted announcing the tragic loss of six additional lives in the last 12 hours bringing the total to 76," said Isaac Mwaura, quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, April 28.

Mwaura added that 29 Kenyans were injured and 19 others were reported missing.

He said police and military had been deployed to provide assistance and support in the affected areas.

Kenya experienced constant rainfall accompanied by severe storms and above-average rainfall during the long rainy season which took place in March-April-May (MAM).

The Kenyan Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a warning urging the public to prepare for heavier rains in several areas.

The areas are mainly in the Rift Valley, the highlands in the West, and the East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Southeast Lowlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, and coastal areas.

Floods that continue to occur have had a negative impact on all 47 districts, causing many residents to evacuate, property and infrastructure damage, and the tragic loss of life.
