JAKARTA - Major General Aharon HaIVA has decided to resign from his position as head of Israeli Interliance Forces (IDF), after assessing that his division failed to carry out its duties so Hamas was able to carry out attacks on the country's territory, saying it always haunts him, the IDF said Monday.
Major General Haiva was one of a number of senior Israeli military commanders who said they failed to estimate and prevent the October 7, 2023 attacks, the deadliest attack in Israeli history.
"Division of intelligence under my command failed to carry out the duties entrusted to us," he said in a resignation letter issued by the IDF.
"Since then, I have always brought that dark day with me," he continued.
However, Major General Haiva will remain in office until his successor is appointed. Israeli media and commentators expect further resignations after the main military campaign in Gaza is over.
Previously, it was reported that Maj. Gen. Haliva's resignation had been coordinated with the IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi.
"By coordinating with the Chief of General Staff (Herzi Halevi), the Head of the Intelligence Directorate of MG Aharon Haiva has asked to be dismissed from his position, following the responsibility of his leadership as Head of the Intelligence Directorate for the October 7 incident," the IDF uploaded on social media X.
It is known that the October 7 attack severely tarnished the reputation of the Israeli military and intelligence services, which were previously considered unbeaten by Palestinian armed groups such as Hamas.
About 1,200 Israelis and foreigners were killed in the attack, most of them civilians, and about 250 people were killed in Gaza, of which 133 people are still held hostage, according to Israeli tallies.
