JAKARTA - The United Nations (UN) announced former Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was appointed as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' personal envoy to Myanmar.

"Bishop replaces Noeleen Heyzer from Singapore... Bishop will carry out that role by bringing his extensive experience as a political, legal and management leader," according to a UN statement reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Saturday, April 6.

Julie Bishop served as Australian foreign minister in 2013-2018.

Earlier on Thursday (4/4), UN official Khaled Khiari announced Guterres would appoint a special envoy to cooperate with members of the Southeast Asian countries association (ASEAN).

According to Khiari, the Secretary-General of the United Nations also wants his envoy to cooperate with all stakeholders to seek a resolution to the political crisis in Myanmar.

Myanmar's military junta in 2017 launched a brutal operation against the Rohingya ethnic population in Rakhine State. The series of operations were cited among human rights groups as genocide.

Nearly 1.2 million Rohiya residents were forced to flee to Bangladesh. They have lived in the neighboring Myanmar country for years, in overcrowded refugee camps.

Myanmar's military in 2021 staged a coup against the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Since then, the military has launched brutal operations across the country against millions of people who oppose junta rule.
