Riots Erupt In North Australia, Teenagers Supervised By Implementation Of Night Hours Despite Easter Holidays

JAKARTA - The northern Australian government implemented a curfew following the riots in Alice Springs on Tuesday, March 26.

The curfew applies to teens from 18.00 to 06.00, including weekends that are included in the long Easter 2024 holiday.

"We want Alice Springs to be a safe place," said the northern Australian Chief Minister or Northern Territory (NT), Eve Gawler, quoted by News.com.au, Thursday, March 27.

Gawler emphasized that the chaos in Alice Springs was unacceptable and the community's patience had also run out in responding to the anti-social behavior carried out by teenagers.

"People are fed up, so am I," he said.

"The government is determined to address this problem, especially the problem of teenagers at Alice Springs," continued Gawler.

Chaos in Alice Springs erupted after the funeral of an 18-year-old teenager who died in a overturned car accident in Alice Springs.

The teenager was killed by eight of his friends who both took the stolen Toyota Hilux.

When a mob riot stormed the streets, it damaged cars, residents' housing, business premises, including supermarkets.

The crowd consisting of about 150 teenagers threw stones, metal rods, and stones around them.

Meanwhile, people who feel afraid that their businesses will be attacked so that their cars are damaged only by arming themselves as simple and preparing for the possibility that is happening inside the house.

Acting NT Police Commissioner James-Grey Spence said five people were arrested and 50 weapons secured in the riots.

A total of 58 additional police officers have been sent to Alice Springs to help maintain security.
